The production version of the Montreal was revealed in 1970 at the Geneva Motor Show. For car fans, this classic has become a favourite. For the first time, the general public got to see the transformation from concept to production. The mysticism that this car held was finally showcased. What a feat of engineering it turned out to be.
The 2.6 litre V8 engine kicks out a whopping 195BHP; this is a serious feat of engineering for many. The car, back in 1970, could reach 0-60MPH in just over seven seconds. For the time, this was decidedly rapid. The Montreal may not compare to some of the more modern cars of 2014; this may not seem quick. In 1970, this was quite the mean machine.
For the time, the 2+2 sports coupe was magnificent. The car had grille adornments attached that were truly cutting edge for the time. The headlights slid back when the lights were turned on. In short, this car was advanced. It was one of the first cars that were ahead of its time.
In the current day, Alfa Romeo still stands the test of time. Times have changed, and cars have developed further. But, the Montreal still lives in people’s hearts as a fantasy car to be revered. After the 1970 Geneva Motor show, the car finally hit the shores of the UK. With it, came the whopping £5,000 price tag. While this may seem a snip at half the price, you need to bear in mind that this was 1970. The car was more expensive that the Jaguar E-Type and the Porsche 911. That should give you some indication of how amazing this car was for the time.
The car was not changed in its seven-year production. Its ingenuity and style did not need modernising. The 1970s give birth too many well-loved things, but none quite as well loved as the Alfa Romeo Montreal. In short, the Alfa Romeo Montreal certainly lives up to the hype.
