Dacia production capacity can no longer be increased; third carmaker could set up locally
The production capacity of Romanian Dacia carmaker can no longer be developed, since it is at its upper limit, but a third producer can set up in Romania, provided the circumstances are beneficial, Dacia Administration Board vice president Constantin Stroe, who also chairs the Romanian Automobile Builders Association (ACAROM) said on Thursday.
‘Dacia’s capacity can no longer be developed. Firstly, a capacity that can be profitably managed stands at around 350,000-400,000 automobiles on the same site. When we discuss about capacities, the market demands double this figure, i.e. 700,000-800,000, so absolutely all elements get complicated.
One must expand the storage parks, the exits. When we tried to develop the capacity from 350,000 units to some 450,000, the financial decision-makers said yes, but we need something else too, not only the wish. We need predictability, infrastructure and so on’, Stroe told a specialist conference.
He announced the additional demand that passes Dacia capability will be met by the Morocco-based plants and explained that the same range of products, but under different brands are being manufactured in other countries in the world too. Stroe added Dacia has the youngest production range in Europe.
‘Provided the overall circumstances in Romania are beneficial, my opinion is that a third producer can set up in Romania, besides the two respected ones, Ford and Renault respectively’, the official underscored.
A slight increase in the car production in Romania is forecast for 2014, Stroe said.
Dacia output grew by 15.8 percent in 2013 as compared to the prior year. As many as 342,620 cars rolled out of Dacia plant last year.
