There might be some small repairs and maintenance issues that you can sort on your car by yourself, but if your car is currently making really weird noises then there’s every chance that you need an expert to take a look. Seeing your local mechanic is often a sticking point for people because they don’t want to spend too much money.
The thing is, if your car is starting to break down and you don’t go get it looked at in time, it’s going to cost you far more than that. You should never be left in the lurch when it comes to your car and whether you start to learn when to change your cambelt or you are hearing crunching noises in the engine, you need advice.
As somebody who’s not actually a car mechanic themselves, it can always help to ask the experts when you do need some help. So we’ve put together a list of signs as to why you may need a mechanic yourself.
- Your brakes are squealing. When it comes to your brakes, you can never be too careful and if they are making funny noises or they are sticking weirdly when you should be asking an expert what to do. New brake pads can grind for the first few days after they’ve been installed and that’s normal and wet brakes are known to make a squeaky noise the problem is that if they’ve come loose you need to know about it, so speak to a mechanic and see whether or not your brakes and brake pads are in good condition.
- It’s hard to start your car. It shouldn’t take more than one or two turns of the key to get your car started, but if you’re finding that it’s taking more and more time to get it going in the morning, then have it checked by a professional. Things like temperature can actually impact your engine starting up, especially in cold weather, but difficulty with starting the engine is one of the first signs that your car is on the way out.
- It feels weird when you drive it. You know your car better than anyone else, and if it’s driving differently to you and it feels different under your hands, then you really should think about going to see a mechanic. Your car should never be too hard to maneuver and if it’s starting to veer off to one side then you may be in for a wheel alignment. A mechanic can help you there, and it’s a good idea to ask for help as early as you notice a problem.
- It’s starting to stink when you have children in the car. Often your car may have a smell to it, especially with food or drinks being spilled, however. If you are smelling other pungent odors and fuel in your car, then there could be a dangerous leak in the fuel line. Or it could be that your car is getting rid of excess oil that it really shouldn’t be getting rid of and it’s overheating. If you notice a strange smell, go and see a mechanic as soon as possible.
