A Glimpse Into Volvo’s New 2014 Models

Volvo: it’s synonymous with safety. For years, people have relied on this automobile manufacturer to protect their families. While the automaker hasn’t always concerned itself with style, it seems that Volvo is having a change of heart.

For 2014, the manufacturer is giving some of its most popular models a major facelift and adding new features to woo buyers who may be a bit jaded with the auto industry.

The S60

The S60 is getting new wheels and an upgraded front styling. A new interior, with optional sport seats, rounds out the cosmetic upgrades. This is one of the few vehicles on the market with a heated steering wheel, and the overall feel is supposed to be a cozy atmosphere that protects you from the cold – which will appeal to northern drivers.

The biggest improvement, however, comes with the addition of a new Sensus Connected Touch infotainment system. This system allows connectivity to the Internet while the driver is in the vehicle. It also turns the display screen on the dash into a touch screen with special sensors mounted on the side – allowing drivers to use it even with gloves on.

Along with the Sensus upgrade, drivers will get a City Safety technology upgrade that protects both drivers and pedestrians on the road. When you’re operating at speeds under 31 MPH, a warning will tell you when you’re getting too close to someone on the road. If you fail to take corrective action, the vehicle will automatically apply braking to prevent you from hitting the pedestrian.

The XC90

The XC90 is the second most popular Volvo to get a makeover. Like the S60, it also gets the Sensus upgrade. Volvo engineers are obsessed with safety. In fact, for 2020, the company has set a goal that no occupant of a new Volvo will be killed or seriously injured in an accident.

Aside from the visual upgrades, the tech under the hood, and running throughout the vehicle itself, allow the car to practically drive itself. You’ve seen lane-assisted steering before, but Volvo’s new driving system on this model doesn’t rely on road markers. It senses obstacles and steers around them if you don’t take evasive maneuvers yourself.

The S80

Both the S80 and its crossover cousin, the XC70, get new bumpers next year. They’re designed to give the vehicles a wider, more purposeful, look. Beyond that, the daytime running lights are getting upgraded to look more contemporary. The rear lights? They’re not being touched – much.

The interior on both cars is also being overhauled. The interior is going to be offered in a few different trim elements and they will both get the Sensus Connected Touch treatment. For connectivity, you have a few choices. The vehicles will come with a car-mounted 3G or 4G dongle or you can use your own mobile phone.

The F-TYPE S Coupe and F-TYPE Coupe are powered by 3-liter supercharged V6 engines in 380hp and 340hp forms respectively, giving 0-60 mph in 4.8/5.1 seconds and top speeds of 171/161 mph2.

The F-TYPE Coupe visual message is defined by three key ‘heart lines’, that visual message beginning with the formidable grille. It is from the twin ‘shark gill’ openings that sit either side of the grille that the essential first heart line – which mirrors the design of the F-TYPE Convertible – flows and begins to take shape. Running up through the headlamp, and accentuated by the LED ‘J blade’ signature running lamps, the line then arcs up over the front wheel arch before dropping elegantly as it runs through the door, washing out into the muscular rear haunch.

The second heart line begins at the rear edge of the door, swelling outwards and upwards to create a visually strong wheel arch, emphasizing the car’s rear-wheel drive layout, before dropping vertically through the tail lamp ...
