BMW has unveiled the BMW Concept Active Tourer plug-in hybrid, which is a preview of BMW’s upcoming compact MPV with its new eDrive hybrid system.
According to BMW, the Concept Active Tourer is geared towards customers of the premium segment who appreciate a high level of comfort, a raised seating position and a generous amount of space..
With its sporty exterior and spacious interior, the BMW Concept Active Tourer sets new standards in the premium-car segment for car enthusiasts who attach particular importance to functionality and aesthetic design.
At the heart of the Concept Active Tourer is BMW##Q##s new eDrive plug-in hybrid drive system that pairs a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-three with a lithium-ion powered electric system.
The total system output is rated at 190 horsepower and 147 pound-feet of torque. More importantly, BMW says this system has an all-electric driving range of close to 20 miles, but the automaker did not give specifics on battery charge times or what types of motors it plans to use.
In true BMW fashion, acceleration is still pretty important, and it has the ability to get from zero to 62 miles per hour in under eight seconds with a top speed of 124 mph. Being a plug-in hybrid, this concept sips fuel with fuel consumption being just 2.5 liters per 100 kilometers (or about 94 miles per gallon) which is comparable to the Toyota Prius Plug-In##Q##s rating of 2.2 L/100 km.
The true innovation of the Concept Active Tourer is its interior, and while BMW hasn##Q##t provided interior shots as of this writing, the company spelled out what to expect in its lengthy press release. S
ome of the highlights include exciting new cabin technology such as the “Cool Shade” roof and numerous display screens. Like the Mercedes-Benz Magic Sky Control roof, BMW##Q##s new “Cool Shade” panoramic roof can change opacity at the push of a button, and it can even has a selectable leaf-like design for a special effect.
The eDrive system from the BMW i8 is used here for the first time in a model from BMW’s brand, and the eDrive name will be the designation for all electric and plug-in hybrids from BMW.
The BMW Concept Active Tourer is powered by a turbocharged 1.5L three-cylinder engine that sends its power to the front wheels and an electric motor sits above the rear axle.
The BMW Concept Active Tourer has a total of 190 horsepower and the electric motor and lithium-ion battery can power the concept up to 18 miles in full electric mode. It can also go from 0 to 62 mph in under 8 seconds with a top speed around 125 mph. According to BMW, the concept’s fuel consumption is less than 2.5 liters per 100 kilometers.
Drivers can get information from the eight-inch gauge cluster display, the optional full color head-up display or the massive 10.25-inch center stack display screen. The HUD projects onto a retractable glass screen and displays information such as vehicle speed, navigation instructions and other warnings.
This new concept vehicle will be unveiled at this year##Q##s Paris Motor Show.
The “BMW Concept Active Tourer” combines the typical BMW design with excellent driving dynamics and a huge amount of space.
All this in a premium compact car.
